Anxiety in women is a more common occurrence, for several different reasons. Get the facts

Anxiety in Women is More Common

Anxiety in women is more common than anxiety in men. Women suffer from a low form of anxiety every day, but at times, it can become a full-blown anxiety attack, panic attack or a phobia. This can happen during menopause or any other biological change in the body or from psychological stress. There are many reasons for anxiety in a woman.

Physical Facts Associated with Anxiety

For years, anxiety in women was always considered to be in their heads. The fact is that anxiety is found throughout the body in the ovaries, heart, GI system, adrenal glands, pituitary glands and your brain. If you brain has an imbalance of the neurotransmitters, it can cause the brain to be sensitive to fear. If the brain has a low level of inhibitory neurotransmitters (calming) and a high level of excitatory neurotransmitters (epinephrine), this can change the chemistry of the brain.

Hormones play a role in anxiety. Hormones influence a woman’s mood. Anxiety in women is often related to HPA axis. If a woman’s hormonal system is unbalanced, it can cause a panic attack or even cause chronic anxiety if it continues. Usually a person with a high anxiety level has a high CRF level.

Menopause, progesterone and estrogen all play a role in anxiety attacks. If a woman is having an up and down hormonal change associated with menopause, PMS and pre-menopause, she is more likely to have a problem with anxiety. This can happen when a woman is weaning herself off HRT. The estrogen levels in a woman’s body will also cause anxiety. Thinking about menopause and anxiety, one could say that menopause contributes to anxiety, but does not cause it. Once the hormonal unbalance is restored, the anxiety is relieved.

Digestion and Nutrition

Anxiety in women is also associated with digestions and nutrition. Good nutrition is important when trying to overcome anxiety. It is also important to have a good diet to avoid anxiety. If the digestive system is not working correctly, you can become upset and trigger anxiety. It is important that you eat right and make sure that your body functions are normal. There are some foods that can trigger anxiety in women. If you notice that after you eat a certain food that you feel anxious, you should stop eating that particular food.

Medicate or Alternative Therapy

Many women that suffer from anxiety prefer to find alternative methods of treatment. This might include cognitive behavioral therapy or changing the diet. Some women prefer supplements to keep the body balanced and healthy. There are other ways to solve anxiety, but you must make sure that you have no other underlying health problems before hand.

Anxiety in women is common and not something that has to be forever. Although it can be associated with a hormonal change in the body does not mean that a woman is anxious because she is having PMS or going through menopause. It is the hormones that can cause the anxiety and this needs to be corrected.

The article discusses “anxiety” among women. This is a very well researched and well-written article. The subject is highly relevant to our modern life where stress, anxiety and depression is killing more people than any other malady.

What I liked about your article is the systematic organization, well-researched findings and an extremely well-composed narrative.

    Thanks for an excellent article.

Anxiety in men exists, but is often ‘covered up’ by men, which is due to the peer pressure that men have, and that they allow.

This article explains Anxiety in women very well, and lays out the reasons for it, but the differences between the levels of anxiety between genders, I don’t feel can be justified.

This can be shown by the rapidly increasing tendency for suicide with young males.

I had problems after being given hormone injections, by a specialist, as a “cure” for a medical condition – the wrong cure it turned out. the injections caused an imbalance, but also made me unable to sleep more than 20 minutes a night, and as I am sure you all know, anxiety is worse in the dark.
I was very lucky to have a great doctor, who first realised the cure was incorrect, (I needed major surgery) and then suggested something which helped greatly. I still do it every day, even though the effects of the injections have worn off.
The doctor suggested sitting down every evening for 20 – 30 minutes with a cold drink and snacks. (Some days I have gin & tonic with nuts, others simply fruit juice, carrot and celery sticks.)
This time is “the end of my working day”, and any problems which are not resolved by then, wait until the next day. My family respect this and do not ask me to resolve their dilemmas after this time.
It worked then, and it works now. I suffer from migraines and am now having less, which is great.
